Model History

Aston Martin and Zagato, arguably the greatest of automotive pairings. It all began with the achingly gorgeous DB4 GT Zagato, launched in 1960. Often lauded as the most beautiful car ever made, just 19 were made and surprisingly, good looks was not the focus of the brief. The idea was to create a lightweight DB4 GT to compete on the race circuit and take the fight to Ferrari.

A reunion came about in the 1980’s with the V8 Zagato, available in Coupé and Volante form. With just 52 and 37 examples built respectively, these really were exclusive machines. While extremely rare, the looks of the V8 Zagato were quite divisive, it was what one might call a ‘Marmite’ car, you either loved it or hated it.

In 2002, the DB7 got the Zagato treatment next with the Coupé version being launched in 2002 and the Roadster (AR1) version following a year later. Just 99 examples of each body type were made.

2011 saw the 50th anniversary of the DB4 GT Zagato. While it was launched in October 1960, the first cars were delivered in 1961 and the first race outing was at Goodwood in Easter 1961. To celebrate, the V12 Zagato was made. Based on the V12 Vantage, just 61 examples were made

Then we come to 2016 when the new ‘Zagato Collection’ begins. Using the then new Vanquish S as a basis, the Italian design house went about designing four jaw dropping body styles to clothe the beautifully engineered VH chassis platform and that roaring 5.9 Litre V12 engine with nigh on 600 bhp (595bhp). The four styles offered were Coupé, Volante, Speedster and Shooting Brake. 99 examples of each were made with the exception of the Speedster, of which just 28 were built.

It is ridiculous, in a sense, to argue which one is the best, but in my opinion, the Shooting Brake pips the others. Why? Well, if you are going to have the most legendary design house create a bespoke body for your Aston Martin, wouldn’t you prefer to have one that isn’t available or similar in standard form by Aston Martin themselves? Of course, all the body styles are different from the standard Vanquish S but the reality is, you can get a standard Coupé or Open version. What you can’t get is anything that remotely resembles or comes close to the Shooting Brake, so to me, that is the winner in the spirit of what Zagato and Aston Martin can do together.

Motor Car for Sale

The Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake for sale at Wrightson Automotive was delivered to the first owner in May 2019. As often is the case in the world’s most exclusive circles, one just isn’t enough, so he ordered two!

While a tad greedy, the first owner had excellent taste, as can be seen in the specification of this example. Finished in Lava Red Metallic, a Zagato exclusive colour, this incredible car features some carefully chosen options. Yes, you read that word correctly, options! You are ordering a £600,000 motor car from two of the most exclusive and bespoke marques in the world and when you say you want the brake calipers finished in Black, they say: “Of course, that will be £800 please.” Really?

Oh well, the options include:

Exterior

Exposed Carbon Fibre Roof Panel with Electrochromic Glass Insert

Q Gloss Black diamond turned wheels

Black Calipers

Black Window Trims

Black Exhaust Tips

Carbon Fibre Side Sills & Side Strakes

Interior

Upgraded forged Carbon Fibre Centre Console

Ventilated Seats with ‘Z’ logo

One-77 Full Leather Steering Wheel

Shadow Bronze Jewellery Pack

A little over a year after taking delivery the decision was made to sell both cars. This car, no. 84 of 99 built, still with delivery mileage, was sold to its second owner in October 2020. Based in Singapore, he kept the car with DK Engineering in their state-of-the-art storage facility.

Despite the minimal use, maintenance didn’t suffer with services in August 2021 @ 46 miles, September 2022 @ 917 miles and January 2024 at 2,388 miles. All servicing was carried out by official Aston Martin centres.

In March 2024 this wonderful motor car was acquired by its current owner, who has loved the car and, in fairness, has used it as intended with numerous trips to the golf course, making the most of the capacious rear luggage area.

Now showing just over 3,000 miles, the decision has been made to move in a more classic direction. The purchase of a 1960’s Aston Martin seems to have lit a different fire in the current owner’s mind when it comes to what to add to the garage. As a result, the Shooting Brake is available for sale.

This incredibly rare and beautiful Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake will be sold with a fresh service and is ready to be enjoyed by its incredibly fortunate, next owner.
