Model History

Not everybody knows that AMG (better known as Mercedes-AMG), while owned and an integral part of Mercedes-Benz, is actually a somewhat independent entity. The main AMG facility is in Affalterbach some 50 kms away from the main Mercedes-Benz factory in Sindelfingen.

As the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz their main job is to develop the AMG versions of the main line up, including building the engines which are famously hand built by one person from start to finish.

The SLS AMG was the first car that was designed and developed from the ground up by AMG, effectively from a blank sheet with no real constraints. Before this, every AMG model was based on a standard Mercedes chassis from somewhere in the line up.

Pitched against the likes of the Ferrari 599 GTB and the Aston Martin DBS as a super GT, AMG looked to the past for inspiration, landing on the icon that is the 300SL Gullwing of the 1950’s. The legendary doors were back for the first time in over 50 years and the endless bonnet and rear set cabin, continued the retro homage to the 300SL.

The engine was something very special too. Based on the naturally aspirated 6.2 Litre V8 M156 that had been seen in some top AMG products, the engine was re-developed specifically for the SLS, so much so that it got its very own code name: M159. The result was claimed to be the most powerful normally aspirated engine ever made, at the time, producing 563bhp and 479 lb ft of torque. The soundtrack of this engine was truly special and probably one of the best sounding of any car, especially today with decreases in displacement and mass turbocharging.

Built in a specially set up section of the Mercedes-Benz factory away from the main production lines, the SLS AMG was a truly bespoke build, in comparison to the main models built on site.

Built between 2009 and 2015 when it was replaced by the AMG GT, the SLS had a short production cycle but has nonetheless cemented its iconic status since with values seeing an encouraging rise over the past few years.

Motor Car for Sale

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG for sale with Wrightson Automotive is a rare UK RHD example. About 6,000 Coupés were built globally, of which just 500-600 were RHD examples with about 350 of those coming to the UK when new.

Finished in Imola Grey with Two Tone Designo leather in Porcelain and Black, this is a very well specified example with desirable options including: Carbon Fibre Interior Package (inc. sills and seat backs), AMG performance steering wheel, Reversing Camera and Hands Free telephone (yes it was an option!).

Registered in July 2012 the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has had 5 previous owners and is currently showing a smidge over 11,000 miles from new (11,073 at the time of writing).

The car has been superbly looked after, benefitting from a full PPF application and an exemplary service record with official Mercedes-Benz service centres only.
